Meeting again on March 24, 2004, at Duquense Heights Community Center in Mt. Washington
Scholastic Sports
A number of concerned parents have been pushing for better oversight within the full range of Pittsburgh Public Schools varsity sports. More interested participants are welcome to join. The next meeting is at the East Liberty branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh at 10 am on Saturday, March 20, 2004.
One issue is the possible migration of the schools into the fabric of the WPIAL. Presently, the sports teams operate in the city behind some iron-curtin where world class is fleeting at best.
The union contract, parent handbook, schedules, and other projects that fit a district-wide discussion are fair grounds, so far. Talk has not been centered on one team nor one individual.
Scholarship Fund Established for Coach and Candidate Leroy Hodge
Leroy Hodge, a great community activist, soccer coach, and candidate for Mayor, City of Pittsburgh, died in early 2004 (obit) and a scholarship has been created in his memory by Pittsburgh Dynamo Soccer.
Hodge is going to be missed a great deal. He died Thursday of complications from an organ transplant.
Contributions by check should be made to: Pittsburgh Dybnamo Soccer, PO Box 5029, Pittsburgh, PA 15206-0029. For more info, call Bob Shreve, 800-982-4078.
Soccer was Mr. Hodge's other passion.
He played with the Pittsburgh Dynamo, a soccer club, and twice went to the national finals.
Two years ago, he showed up at Westinghouse High School to rebuild its team, said Principal Marilyn Barnett.
Under his tutelage, the Westinghouse team became more visible and grew in numbers. Mr. Hodge would come to the school cafeteria, walk around with his clipboard and notes and recruit players.
"He was focused on making sure the kids had basic skills and knowledge of the sport," said Barnett. "It opened up doors for more of our students to have interest in something other than the major sports."

PIIN Pushed Pittsburgh's Citiparks Recreation Centers to open Computer Labs
Playing well with others to expand opportunities for more literate recreation centers did NOT occur with Pittsburgh Mayor's administration. A public action on Thursday, February 20, 2003 made a statement concerning Youth and Recreation. The task force illustrated priorities.
